    Even on a September afternoon, Merak seems braced against the cold. Its stone houses bunch on the plateau like cattle in a winter field. Its lanes are narrow and stacked high with firewood. In the coldest months, when most residents padlock their homes and retreat with their herds to lower altitudes, snow blankets the silent village. Today the lanes are busy; the air redolent of wood smoke, livestock and frost.
