The Fann Mountains are a unique section of the famous Pamir Mountains. This is truly a land of lakes, mysterious peaks and ancient legends. Tajikistan is the smallest country in Central Asia whose history can be traced back to a time when it was a part of the Persian Empire. Much later, in the 20th century, it became a constitutional republic of the Soviet Union and eventually gained independence in 1991. Landlocked and covered by mountains of ancient lore, more than half of the country sits above 9,800 feet / 3000 meters with the Fann Mountains lying to the north of the capital Dushanbe. There are more than 100 significant peaks in the Fann Range, the highest being Chimtarga at 18,008 feet. During our trekking journey we will travel along a network of interconnecting high valleys and numerous lakes where semi-nomadic Tajik shepherds graze their flocks of sheep and goats. We have decided to access this area through Tashkent in neighboring Uzbekistan allowing us to easily include a visit to the Great Silk Road town of Samarkand. After trekking we will spend time in the ancient cities of Samarkand and Tashkent, enjoying their bustling bazaars and unique architectural monuments.
